Language and Ownership in the Age of AI

In a country shaped by histories of colonial extraction, this session will examine who controls and benefits from the use of indigenous languages within the AI economy. While AI presents new possibilities for inclusion, it also raises urgent questions about ownership, representation, consent, trust and control. Who builds these systems, and whose interests do they serve? Can indigenous communities retain agency over their languages and knowledge, give meaningful consent, and share in the benefits when these become the data shaping our digital and democratic lives?
